Keith Green with Dally
Keith first entered the Delta Pet Partner Program in 2007 with his Dalmatian, Dally. Dally proved to be a big hit with her boundless energy and wagging tail. Her energy has only been matched by Keith’s! Since joining the program Keith has become a valuable asset to the Townsville Branch. In 2008 Keith gained accreditation with his other dog Dalmatian/Labrador cross, Miss Millie. Keith has undertaken weekly visiting duties at Parklands Nursing Home, and since 2008, the Townsville Hospital. He also visits fortnightly at a local respite centre. When The Townsville Hospital Palliative Care Centre opened in 2009, Keith undertook to visit there as well. The Palliative Care Centre is a very specific unit which requires volunteers who are able to develop mutually beneficial relationships with clients and their families as they journey through the palliating process. Keith undertakes this role with due respect, concern and consideration. As well as visiting weekly in this unit, Keith is also available to visit as the unit requests and has ‘put his hand up’. Whilst this occurs infrequently, the fact that Keith is willing to visit and sit with a dying person with Dally is commendable. His contribution to the program is immeasurable and we cannot thank Keith enough for his commitment to the program.
Often referred to as ‘The Green Girls’, Daly Green and Miss Millie Green make a striking and eye catching pair. Whenever Keith attends walks (which are held monthly) or events with one of his dogs, not only are they star attractions but Keith is keen to promote the program and will chat to people about the valuable work that the ‘Delta Dogs’ do. Keith also maintains links with one of the local radio personalities and will from time to time ring “Pricey”, to keep him abreast of ‘Delta Townsville’ activities. Keith is always happy to step into the role of orientation “buddy” when new teams are being placed into facilities where he visits.
Keith has also maintained an active involvement with the Townsville Delta Therapy Dog Program in the capacity of ‘general support’ person. In this role he commits countless hours, ensuring that the volunteer program continues to offer valued experiences to clients and volunteers alike. His commitment is all the more noticeable as he drives a hearse which houses the equipment required for all promotional and assessment events. Helping to organise, Keith also ensures that there are sufficient teams present at promotional events such as ‘Paws in the Park’ and volunteer days. In addition Keith recently coordinated three teams to attend a promotional event at the Cowboys National Rugby League Game. This included collecting the tickets, arranging a meeting point and driving the dogs and their owners to the game. This ensured that as Coordinator, I could focus on observing the dogs for signs of stress as well as promoting the Program to the audience.
Keith truly believes in fostering positive human – animal interactions and is a committed team member deserving of this award.
