Frequently asked questions - Classroom Canines
- How long does each lesson last?
Lessons are general 1 - 2 hours duration. This should be suitable for the comfort level of your dog, while allowing the opportunity to maximise the benefits of pet therapy.
- What if my dog is sick?
The comfort and wellbeing of your dog is of paramount importance. If you dog is too ill to attend a scheduled visit, you should contact your local branch coordinator and/or school to cancel the visit until your dog is feeling well again.
- How often do I need to visit my assigned school?
Generally, visits occur once every week. The volunteer and school can discuss an appropriate day and time to schedule the regular visits, to coincide with reading lessons.
- Can I choose the school I visit?
We will work with you to ensure you are happy with the school you are assigned.
- How far will I have to travel to get to my allocated school?
We aim to assign facilities no more than 20 minutes travelling time from the volunteer's home.
- What is the cost?
As a non-profit organisation, the Delta Society relies heavily on sponsorships, community support and donations from participating facilities to make this service available. We ask schools that wish to participate in the Delta Classroom Canines program to donate $600 per year for each Classroom Canines team visiting your facility. Please note this donation will increase as of the 1st January 2018 to $700 per team/per year. This donation is in no way related to the services of the volunteer, who receives no remuneration for their participation. All donations are fully tax deductible and used specifically for the ongoing support and expansion of the Delta Classroom Canines program.
